Adding the Element of Surprise

Hi guys! Today I will be talking about the effects of adding the element of surprise to your piece of work.

Before I start, I have to say that this is basically only for fiction writers because it doesn't really make sense to have an element of surprise in nonfiction, since it is true.

When writing, I think that you should try your best to add the element of surprise at LEAST once. Normally, this can happen at the end, since that is the part when your readers already know about the story and the plotline, and it will be super surprising. But you can also add the element of surprise towards the middle of your story because by then, really good readers are probably making predictions.

Adding the element of surprise can create a more exciting novel. The element of surprise should be really unexpected. You can have really small hints towards the beginning, where your readers will probably not remember, once they have gotten to the middle. Try not to make it too obvious because it will not be a surprise anymore :(

When adding it, try to weave it skillfully into the story, but make it surprising. I tend to write choppy sentences when writing the surprise, but you can do it in blocky paragraphs. This is an exception to what I wrote a few days ago :)

Think about your story from a reader's point of view. Try not to pick an ending or a plot twist that most readers expect. Also, try not to mimic someone else's surprises because they start to get old.

Thanks for reading. Please comment about what you thought and also about what you want me to blog about next!
