DESCRIPTION MUCH?

Today I will be blogging on the pros and cons of adding description to your piece of work.

Before I start, I am going to pretend that you are writing a novel or short story, instead of a report, essay, or school composition. This makes it easier for me to write.

When writing a novel/story, you want to make sure that you are adding necessary description to your story, but not so much that you will bore your readers. Here's why you should add description...

*To give your readers a clear description of what you are writing about
*To help add elements to your setting that you can't convey in dialogue
*To make your story more realistic
*To vary your writing in your story
*To try to show readers exactly what you are picturing in your mind

Here is why you shouldn't add TOO much description...

*Bores readers
*Stops readers from using their creativity and imagination
*Makes readers abandon the book
*Makes readers skim the book
*Makes readers sick of reading the description
*Not exciting

So when writing, you should write about one to two paragraphs when introducing a new setting. When you are introducing new characters, you want to write about one paragraph when you first see them, and then add about one more paragraph later on (the next page, the next chapter, etc). Try not to space the descriptions TOO far apart, because by then readers have created their own mental images, and it really shatters your readers when you write something completely different from what they were thinking.

THANKS FOR READING!
