Free-Write: What to Do When Your Writing Comes to a Stop

Free-Write

If you have writer's block, or need help starting a new story, essay, etc., you should start with doing a free-write.

A free-write is basically where you open up a new document, or grab an empty piece of scratch paper, and write. Just write anything that comes to your head, and just write. It doesn't have to be grammatically correct, the spelling doesn't have to be perfect, and your punctuation doesn't have to be in the correct spaces. A free-write can be as long as you want it, or as short as you want it.

If you are looking for a length to write your free-write, just keep on writing until you get the correct inspiration for your story, essay, etc., or if you have drained all of your creative juices out onto that sheet or doc.

Afterwards, you can either recycle, delete, or keep your free-write. Your free-write can be about anything, from school to cars, to wars to frogs. You do not have to keep it simple, but most people like to because this is just random stuff that you are writing for fun.

Free-writes can be a big help when it comes to getting your river of writing running again. Just because there is a clog in your drain doesn't mean that a plumber can't fix!

When in doubt of your writing, start a new free-write!
